Strategic Roadmap Workshop for Expanding Interactive Music Experiences on Smart TVs

Strategic Roadmap Workshop for Expanding Interactive Music Experiences on Smart TVs

Company type: Media and telecommunications company

Customer type: B2C – Enhancing social entertainment experiences through interactive music innovations

1. Context

As Senior Product Manager, I was responsible for exploring opportunities to expand the smart TV platform’s interactive music capabilities. The platform provided core enablers for interactive entertainment, including:

  • Web app integration
  • API-based camera & microphone connectivity
  • AR filters & interactive effects
  • Session recording & social sharing
  • Multi-device & cross-platform integration (TV & mobile)

The goal of this strategic roadmap workshop was to:

  • Identify new opportunities for expanding interactive music apps.
  • Assess user experience models, considering single-user (household) vs. multi-user (networked) engagement.
  • Define user interaction methods, evaluating TV remote vs. mobile app control.
  • Evaluate technical feasibility and align with the platform’s long-term roadmap.

2. Challenge

Key challenges included:

  • Strategic Justification: Before proceeding, we needed to demonstrate the value proposition for expanding the interactive music category. This required quick market research and engagement projections.
  • Proposition & UX Alignment: Ensuring that any proposed enhancements provided meaningful improvements to the platform’s entertainment experience.
  • User Interaction Considerations: Determining how users would engage with the experience:
    • Standalone vs. networked models: Would the experience be household-based or allow multi-user participation across different locations?
    • TV-controlled vs. mobile-controlled interfaces: Evaluating accessibility and ease of interaction.
  • Cross-functional buy-in: As this was a roadmap-level discussion, alignment was needed across product management, propositions, technology, and market research teams.

3. Approach

To drive structured discussions and generate actionable insights, I designed a hybrid workshop format with the following key steps:

  • Hybrid Workshop Execution
    • Hosted at the company’s London office, allowing for in-person collaboration in a dedicated session.
    • Remote teams joined via Microsoft Teams, with discussions documented in Miro boards for real-time ideation and input.
  • Structured Brainstorming on Key Themes
    • Music genres & engagement formats → Expanding content variety to increase interaction.
    • Gamification & social features → Exploring interactive challenges, competitions, and shared experiences.
    • AR filters & visual customisation → Enhancing visual engagement with dynamic effects.
    • User control & accessibility → Evaluating interaction models for TV vs. mobile app-based control.
  • Real-Time Feasibility Checks: Engaged technology teams during the session to validate technical feasibility early on, ensuring only practical ideas were carried forward.
  • Post-Workshop Refinement: Outlined potential opportunities for interactive music expansion, documented key insights, and structured a repeatable approach for assessing new interactive entertainment concepts.

4. Role & Achievements

As the lead facilitator of the workshop, I:

  • Led the ideation process, ensuring discussions were structured, insightful, and action-driven.
  • Facilitated cross-functional collaboration, aligning product, propositions, technology, and research teams.
  • Defined key user interaction models, helping shape long-term roadmap decisions.
  • Drove feasibility discussions, ensuring all proposed ideas were both strategic and technically viable.

5. Results

  • Clarified next steps for potential interactive music expansion.
  • Strengthened cross-functional alignment, setting the stage for future developments.
  • Highlighted key areas for potential future consideration.
  • Established a structured, repeatable approach for evaluating new entertainment ideas.
